the gaitareta
September 26 was a very emotional day. Our friend and great musician Kepa Junkera made the first stop of his autumn tour in our workshop and that day we presented the “Gaitareta”.
It all started from an original idea of Kepa: to make the bagpipe-tambourine. The craftsman Alberto Oliveros spoke with Álvaro and we began to work on a mix of instruments unimaginable until then; that’s how geniuses are. For our part, we made the chanter and the blowpipe, both from boxwood. And Alberto, from Gregorio y Oliveros, dressed it with its cover and fringes, and personalized it with Kepa’s signature.
In its presentation and around this tireless musical myth, we were accompanied by many talented friends such as the gaita teacher Luis O Caruncho, the artisan Patricia González Iglesias from Obradoiro de Costura Saians, who came with Natalia to pick up her gaita. And also, Pepe Formoso from the Hotel Bela Fisterra, the pianist Juan Carlos Cambas, the professor Pedro Lamas, our Susana Seivane and the photographer Soraya Sampedro, Norelys, etc.
La Gaitareta surrounded itself with so much love that is like a totem for us, a symbol of unity and friendship and an example of Kepa’s ability to connect people, which linked us all, transmitting his passion and enthusiasm. As a sign of his affection, Kepa wanted to leave the Gaitareta in our museum so that it could be part of our collection.
